New loan striker Promise David could face Aston Villa in Premier League opener

Promise David has emerged as a contender to inject a clinical edge into Albion’s attack.

The fresh frontman could get his opportunity when Aston Villa come to town.

David, secured on loan from Royale Union St Gilloise with an optional purchase clause, joined his teammates for training on Friday.

Fabian Hurzeler will determine whether the forward has any involvement as Villa arrive at the Amex for Sunday’s Premier League curtain-raiser (2pm).

Hurzeler has previously deployed Georginio Rutter and Charalampos Kostoulas in forward positions following Danny Welbeck’s move to Chelsea.

The Canadian international David presents an alternative option.

Hurzeler stated that David brings excellent and uplifting qualities to the squad, describing him as a natural finisher with scoring instincts embedded in his play and thinking.

The head coach feels Kostoulas shares that predatory mentality and noted that they are working to cultivate the same approach in Rutter, suggesting that converting chances and providing key passes should become his next progression.

He added that David has demonstrated throughout his career that he possesses the ability to find the net frequently.

Hurzeler pointed out that last season proved they could handle having multiple attacking threats, as they led the division in terms of unique goal scorers within their squad.

This flexibility demonstrates both the quality available and the shared ambition among the group to contribute, something he expects to continue this campaign.

David is viewed as filling the striking vacancy left by Welbeck, though Hurzeler clarified they are not seeking an identical replacement.

He explained that Welbeck received a two-year offer from a major club, which must be considered.

With David, they have acquired an entirely different type of player, so comparing them directly would be misleading.

Rather, they have added someone with distinct characteristics, fresh personality, and renewed dynamism with an alternative methodology, which aligned with their vision.

The responsibility now falls on them to provide him with adjustment time and hopefully include him in Sunday’s matchday plans.
