Dario Vidosic has insisted the Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Barcelona carries far more significance than a standard pre-season match for Brighton.
The two sides will square off at the Estadi Johan Cruyff Stadium in what has become a prestigious annual occasion for the Spanish champions, who have triumphed in all four iterations of the women’s tournament so far. Barcelona are famously known for their more than a club philosophy.
Brighton’s preparations have been adjusted specifically to accommodate this fixture, with the squad abbreviating their Netherlands-based training camp to accept the invitation.
Vidosic emphasised that his side are treating this as a competitive encounter rather than merely a friendly. He explained that Barcelona place considerable importance on this particular match and that Brighton will be battling for silverware on the night. The opportunity to test themselves against such prestigious opposition marks a significant moment for the club, with Vidosic noting that numerous attractive proposals had come their way this summer only for scheduling conflicts to prevent partnerships. However, he expressed satisfaction with the current trajectory, believing it validates the work being put in.
According to remarks Vidosic shared with The Argus, initial contact from Barcelona came during the previous campaign. Fixture alterations on their part meant the arrangement could not proceed at that time, though the Catalan club identified Brighton as their preferred opponents should circumstances allow on a future occasion.
In their most recent preparation match, Brighton secured a 3-0 victory against Genk, with Norwegian international Olaug Tvedten accounting for two goals and emerging talent Taylor Warren adding the third.
