Former Albion defender Connor Goldson back training after second heart operation

Former Brighton centre-back Connor Goldson has disclosed he has resumed training following his second major cardiac operation.

Goldson flew back to Cyprus, where he recently joined Apollon, after medical examinations confirmed the recurrence of an aortic enlargement problem.

He underwent a lengthy 13-hour procedure and has now returned to his base in Limassol, progressing well in his rehabilitation.

He explained to talkSPORT that his current training sessions involve solo work with a conditioning specialist, as medical staff have prohibited any contact with others due to his sternum being divided.

Beyond that limitation, he reported feeling well. He noted he has already started playing football and completes daily runs, expressing positivity about his condition.

Medical professionals informed him of a 12-week convalescence period, and he has now reached approximately the halfway mark.

His internationally renowned surgeon has expressed strong confidence in his bid to resume top-level football.

According to Goldson, the specialist advised him that physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy heart. The surgeon reportedly stated that regardless of whether he continues playing, he should attend the gym and run regularly for exercise. The medical professional apparently assured him he could return to football in 12 weeks.

Goldson expressed eagerness to resume playing, particularly now that he has returned to the field and is handling the ball.

He noted completing five kilometres of running during his current sessions.

The surgeon apparently told him the 12-week timeframe relates specifically to bone healing, while his cardiac function improved immediately.

Goldson had a review appointment around a week to ten days previously.

The surgeon gave him full clearance regarding his heart, confirming everything is satisfactory, with the only remaining concern being the chest bone mending.

He has completed five weeks of recovery with roughly seven weeks remaining.

He expressed confidence that he will achieve full fitness within that timeframe and be prepared, after which decisions can be made.
