Verbruggen hopes wingerless Albion can surprise opponents with tactical changes

Bart Verbruggen is hoping Brighton can catch opponents off guard tactically after seeing two of his key attacking options ruled out through injury.

The goalkeeper has grown much more assured when playing passes out from the back.

He also retains the option of lofting long balls forward for his wingers to chase as an effective alternative.

That tactic now appears to have been removed as an option with Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh unavailable.

Brighton responded by deploying Maxim De Cuyper, who played as a winger during his youth career, on the left flank in Saturday’s match against Bologna.

Diego Gomez has featured in a wide midfield position since the latter stages of last season.

Verbruggen said the team builds partnerships on the pitch, and that every training session presents an opportunity for everyone to develop those connections, so they are not entirely dependent on Mitoma or Minteh. While they are important players for the side and their absence is unfortunate, there are plenty of capable options who can fulfil that role. Each squad member has developed strong partnerships too. Every disadvantage can become an advantage and the different qualities these players possess might even allow the team to catch opponents by surprise.

Verbruggen is increasingly viewed as a potential leader in the squad following the departures of several experienced players over the summer.

He said he is simply being himself. He has always been quite vocal and as he gets older and gains more experience, those qualities emerge more naturally. The team has lost a lot of know-how compared to last season, but that also presents opportunities for other players to step up and demonstrate their character. He remains true to himself and will continue acting that way.

Brighton travel to Tromso tomorrow and are not expected to hold a training session at the match venue, which is permitted under UEFA protocols.
